On Thursday 23 June I will be spending a night in the cold as part of the 2016 Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise awareness and funds to assist Vinnies with their work in the community supporting people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
For one night, I will experience what is a daily reality for more than 105,000 Australians; my night however, will come without the despair, sadness, violence and isolation often tied to the experience of homelessness.
Alarmingly, homelessness is on the rise and I feel compelled to do what I can to help Vinnies, the statistics have shocked me:
- 60% of the homeless population is under the age of 35.
- More than 17,000 Australian children under the age of 12 have no permanent home.
- Women and children make up 59% of people who access specialist homelessness services.
Vinnies is actively involved in early intervention and prevention activities with at-risk groups. Their homelessness support services offer safe nights, essential amenities, food and educational programs to individuals experiencing homelessness in our community.
I would be grateful for any donation you can make in support of my participation at this important event. Please share this email with friends, work colleagues and anyone else who may be willing to support this event.
Each year Vinnies helps over 1.3 million people across Australia and they couldn’t provide this assistance without the support of the generous public. Your support means more to someone than you will ever know.
